Your best jumping-off point for a vacation to the Amalfi Coast is the ancient city of Positano. Situated in a small alcove in Campania, Italy, Positano has been a major trading port since the medievaltimes. Rising to its most bustling economic prosperity in the 16th and 17th centuries, the following centuries saw mass emigration, and the economy of the port started to decline. In the 20th century, the site started drawing travelers from all around the world, especially with the rising popularity of airplanes and jetsetters. Author John Steinbeck was quoted as saying:

“Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” — John Steinbeck

The entire area of Positano is stepped on steep cliffs. Your legs must really be in-shape to take on some the most chillingly-sheer roads and pathways.

All along the Amalfi Coast paths, roads, and walkways wind in an out of the various cities of Campania.

As you make your way up and down the coast, the sights grow ever-more impressive, as rock formation and coastal oddities appear out of the sea mist and beckon you north towards the Isle of Capri.

There are so many sights that are relatively navigable with ease to the north, west, south, and east. Arienzo, Praiano, and San Michele are a quick sail away from Positano, and offer their own take on Campanian lifestyle and culture. Positano itself offers some of the freshest seafood in the Mediterranean, and Limoncello — a light liquor — is a local favorite that is recognized around the world.

Of its many famous visitors, the countryside has been the vacation home of some of the most famous actors, actresses, and heads of state. In-fact, The Rolling Stones wrote their beloved song “Midnight Rambler” while lazing in the sun and dining in the small cafes that line the precarious steps of Positano.

The Coast of Amalfi is a beautiful destination that can offer culture, cuisine, and — best of all — warm sun and cooling waters.
